PAMELA CURTIS SWALLOW

Raised in New England, Pam now lives in New Jersey. She has a background in
education, and for many years led a double life, working as both school librarian and as author of books for young people. But what a perfect combination that was. She was able to keep in touch with children and young adults, as well as with the books they love. Pam is now a full-time author, writing for many ages and in many genres: picture books, chapter books, middle grade, young adult, and non-fiction. While her books generally focus upon kids and animals, she has also crafted a book on the writing process.

Pam’s vivid memories of her childhood, along with her love of nature and her
experiences as a mother, step-mother, and educator, have provided rich story material
from which to draw. To create books for children and young adults is, for Pam, a
privilege.

Author Visits

When visiting schools, Pam is able to do both large group presentations and smaller group writing workshops; she will customize the event to meet the needs of the school. Through discussion and visual presentation in her assembly programs, she tells how and why some of her books came to be written and she gives a behind-the-scenes peek into a writer’s life. She sprinkles writing tips throughout her program and strives to show that if she can do it, others can as well.

In Pam’s writing workshops, the emphasis is upon helping students to feel more confident about writing. She discusses basic elements of fiction writing and takes students through the process of developing character, setting and plot. Some schools choose to have Pam visit for more than one day. In those residences, Pam delves more deeply into the writing process, adding sessions on use of dialogue, detail, body language, gripping first lines, tension, openings, and endings. Through positive critiquing, students also learn how to constructively respond to the writings of others.
