PONDER GOEMBEL

Ponder Goembel always loved art. She grew up in the multicultural city of Baltimore among artistic family and friends. She attended summer classes at the Maryland Institute of Art and created brochures and posters in high school. Later, she attended the Philadelphia College of Art, now part of the University of the Arts. Majoring in illustration, she acquired her first freelance job before graduation.  She continued to work for clients in Philadelphia and New York for about ten years. Many of her illustrations could be seen in advertisements, pamphlets, magazines, record album covers and book jackets.

Ponder’s first picture book and her first child came at about the same time. Reading to her daughter influenced her to continue in the children’s book field.

Ponder is a frequent visitor to schools, libraries and book stores where she loves to show and tell how she creates children’s illustrations.

Author Visit

Ponder Goembel visits elementary schools, libraries and conferences to show and tell about illustrating picture books. With slides and an interactive drawing demonstration, she shows how to “put on your thinking cap” to create images that best illustrate the words of a book. Her Artists’ Residency includes a workshop that encourages literacy through illustration.
